Standing Quail
This piece was crafted by Peter Ray James. He takes canvas, sews it together, stuffs it with fiberfill, paints it adding Native symbolism to it. In this way he is telling a story with each piece in addition to decorating it. To the uneducated in Native history, they are beautiful, but to those who understand the symbolism, they each have a unique story to tell. There are four pointed night stars to represent the four cardinal directions, set of lines to represent the mountains and generations ascending to the creator, and a symbol of life in the center. She also has a medicine bundle on her back to help protect her from attack from behind. The piece is approximately 7 by 8 inches.
